Christopher C. Conner (Ret.)\nMediator/Arbitrator\, Optimal Dispute Resolutions \nJudge Christopher C. Conner continues his decorated and renowned career at Optimal Dispute Resolutions\, following his retirement from the bench after more than 20 successful years as a federal judge. Judge Conner joined Optimal Dispute Resolutions in 2025 after serving as a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania from 2002 to 2024. His time on the bench also included the esteemed honor of serving as the district’s chief judge from 2013 to 2020. \nJudge Conner acts as a mediator assisting clients in achieving amicable resolutions prior to trial. He is also happy to accept appointments as a special master or arbitrator in complex litigation\, including multidistrict litigation matters (MDL). \nThousands of cases came into Judge Conner’s courtroom\, where he fairly and without bias presided over some of the most significant cases in the Middle District. Among the most notable was the “Kids for Cash” case\, where two federal judges in northeast Pennsylvania were sent to prison for receiving money for declaring juveniles delinquent and assigning them to residential placement centers for infractions that normally would result in minor penalties. Judge Conner presided over multiple hearings and a lengthy trial to determine damages for the individuals impacted by the scheme\, including determining damage amounts for the families impacted by the scheme between the judges and the juvenile detention center’s owner. The case drew national headlines for months as it played out in Judge Conner’s courtroom. \nJudge Conner’s judicial experience has made him a coveted speaker on continuing legal education (CLE) panels and\nlectures in Pennsylvania. He’s also a sought-after author and has spoken and written on a broad spectrum of litigation-related topics and ethical issues. \nJudge Conner serves as co-chair of Saxton & Stump’s Investigations and Criminal Defense and Appellate and Post-Trial Advocacy groups. Attorneys hopefully recognize that\, unlike many other professionals\, their lives are already filled to the brim with anxiety and stress. The consequences of shrugging it off can be catastrophic. One of those consequences that we often hear about is burnout. \nAnd then there’s a special type of burnout called “secondary traumatic stress” or “compassion fatigue”. The ramifications of trauma and compassion fatigue aren’t discussed as frequently as those of stress and burnout thus\, for many attorneys\, they are topics in need of attention. \nSecondary or vicarious trauma can be the cumulative effect of listening to a client or witness relay stressful\, often graphic\, stories and experiences. When we examine it more closely\, we realize it is a part of many practice areas. Those who experience compassion fatigue tend to take on the pain\, suffering and burdens of the people they are helping. It is an exhaustion that is felt physically\, emotionally\, or mentally and can affect numerous areas of your life\, often leaving you feeling numb. \nRecent studies have shown that there has been a dramatic increase in impairment due to alcoholism\, addiction\, and mental health disorders among members of the legal profession. The statistics are compelling and clearly indicate that 1 out of 3 attorneys will likely have a need for substance use or mental health services at some point in their careers. \n10:15-11:15 AM | CLE 3 | 1.0 substantive credit \nNavigating Divorce for Business Owners: Strategies and Considerations for Attorneys \nPresented by Teresa Marino\, Esquire\, Member\, McNees Wallace & Nurick & Jill Laskowitz\, Esquire\, Of Counsel\, McNees Wallace & Nurick \nTeresa Marino and Jill Laskowitz will guide attorneys through the special considerations involved when clients’ personal and business interests overlap in divorce cases. The program will highlight common issues for business owners\, including asset division and support considerations. Attendees will review basic entity structures and their impact on income reporting\, learn strategies for working with experts on business valuation and cash-flow analysis\, and explore complex scenarios such as dual-spouse involvement in the business or commingling of personal and business finances. Attorneys will gain practical approaches for advising clients with business interests in divorce. \n11:30-12:30 PM | CLE 4 | 1.0 substantive credit \nCASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates): 15 years of Best-Interest Advocacy for Children \nPresented by Jessica Laspino\, Executive Director\, CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties \nThis presentation will cover the growth and impact of CASA’s core model\, best-interest advocacy for children in the dependency system.  The presenters will also discuss the recently piloted program that expands CASA’s best-interest advocacy to children involved in private custody matters. \nPRESENTERS: \n \nHonorable Craig W. Stedman\nLancaster County Court of Common Pleas Judge \nJudge Stedman was elected to the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas in 2019 and serves as a family law judge. Prior to his election\, Judge Stedman served as District Attorney for twelve years and supervised all criminal prosecutions in Lancaster County. Judge Stedman was an active member of the Executive Committee of the PA District Attorney’s Association. Prior to his election as DA\, Judge Stedman served as Assistant District Attorney in Lancaster for 17 years. During that time\, he prosecuted all manner of felony and misdemeanor offenses to include violent crime and drug offenses. Judge Stedman specialized in homicide prosecutions and took over as the Chief of the Lancaster County Major Crimes Unit in 2000. Judge Stedman also served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 2002-06. Judge Stedman received his law degree from the Dickinson School of Law and received a Bachelor of Arts in History from University of Delaware. He attended the University of Delaware on a ROTC scholarship and served as a military intelligence officer in the United States Army Reserves upon graduating from the United States Army Intelligence Center and School in Fort Huachuca\, Arizona. He remains a member of the Military Officer’s Association of America. Judge Stedman served as a member of numerous boards to include the Lancaster County Prison Board\, Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Institute\, Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Association Best Practices Committee\, Pennsylvania Commission on Sentencing Strategic Planning Work Group\, Lancaster Community Safety Coalition\, and the Historic Rock Ford Plantation. Judge Stedman was a member of the Lancaster Multiple Sclerosis Leadership Class and the Advisory Council. He is a 2004 graduate of Leadership Lancaster and now instructs their annual session on Law and Justice. Judge Stedman was named the HSUS Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Official of the Year in 2017 for his leadership and efforts in the fight against animal cruelty. \n \nPenn B. Glazier\, Esquire\nLancaster County Divorce Hearing Officer \nPenn B. Glazier is the Divorce Conference Officer for the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas and maintains a private practice in Lancaster focusing on estate planning\, wills\, business law\, personal injury\, and Social Security disability. A graduate of Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School\, he has practiced law in Pennsylvania since 1970. \n \nBrian S. Quinn\, Esquire\nLawyers Concerned for Lawyers \nBrian S. Quinn\, Esquire is a licensed attorney in Pennsylvania who currently serves as the Education and Outreach Coordinator for Lawyers concerned for Lawyers of Pennsylvania\, Inc.\, a Lawyers Assistance program established in 1988 for the purpose of helping lawyers\, judges and law students recover from alcoholism\, drug addiction and mental health disorders. \nMr. Quinn obtained his undergraduate degree in 1970\, his law degree in 1973 and a certificate in Drug and Alcohol counselling in 2012\, all from Villanova University. In addition to his position with Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers in 2017\, Mr. Quinn has been engaged in private practice for nearly 50 years as well. His practice is now limited to estate planning and administration. \nMr. Quinn has also worked in the field of Alcohol and Drug Counselling in suburban Philadelphia. \nMr. Quinn is a past member of the Board of Directors of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of Pennsylvania and served as a peer volunteer prior to accepting his current role as the organization’s Educator. \nMr. Quinn has conducted CLE presentations for Bar Associations\, private law firms and professional organizations\, as well as for CLE providers\, on a variety of topics in the fields of Lawyer wellness and impairment in the legal profession. He is a nationally recognized educator and wellness advocate. \n \nJill M. Laskowitz\nOf Counsel\, McNees Wallace & Nurick \nJill is Of Counsel in the McNees Wallace & Nurick Family and Collaborative Law Group. What was once an occasional occurrence — a lawyer’s departure from one firm to join another — has become an everyday event. The increased mobility has generated numerous legal and ethical issues and disputes. Compounding the situation\, no neat framework exists to address the interests of the departing lawyer\, the lawyer’s old firm\, the lawyer’s new firm\, and most importantly\, the client. This program will outline the ethical\, legal and practical issues these situations raise\, and provide advice on how attorneys can address such matters while fully complying with their ethical obligations to the firms and their clients. Vanaskie\, former Judge with the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania\, is a member of Stevens & Lee’s Litigation Department.  He co-chairs the firm’s Appellate Practice Group with Karl S. Myers and chairs the firm’s Mediation\, Neutral Services and Alternative Dispute Resolution Practice Group. \nJudge Vanaskie was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 2010 where he served with distinction for eight years\, participating in and deciding many complex\, high profile cases. Before 2010\, he served as a district judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania for 16 years\, including seven years as chief judge. \nIn May of 2021\, he was appointed by the President of the Pennsylvania Bar Association to serve as chair of a statewide task force to study the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the delivery of legal services and to make recommendations to mitigate the disruption of services resulting from future catastrophes. The task force generated a comprehensive report that will serve as the foundation for enhancing the use of technology to assure that legal services will be delivered despite widespread disasters. \n\nKarl Myers\, Esquire\nCo-Chair of the Appellate Practice Group\, Stevens & Lee \nKarl Myers co-chairs Stevens & Lee’s Appellate Practice Group with Hon. Thomas I. Vanaskie (Ret.). He is a leading Pennsylvania appellate lawyer with two decades of experience arguing and briefing a wide variety of high-profile\, precedent-setting cases before the appellate courts of Pennsylvania and other jurisdictions. Throughout his career\, clients have entrusted Karl with numerous high-risk appeals valued\, in aggregate\, at a half-billion dollars. He focuses on cases before the Pennsylvania Supreme\, Commonwealth and Superior Courts\, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. \n\nHonorable Victor P. Stabile\nSuperior Court of Pennsylvania \nJudge Stabile was elected as a judge to the Superior Court of Pennsylvania in 2013. Prior to his election\, Judge Stabile had over thirty years of broad legal experience. He is a 1982 graduate of the Dickinson School of Law\, where he was a member of the Law Review and the President of the Student Bar Association. Upon graduation\, he served as an appellate judicial clerk in the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania. After completion of his clerkship\, he was appointed a Deputy Attorney General in a trial division of the Office of Attorney General where he litigated cases in defense of Commonwealth agencies throughout many of the Commonwealth’s trial courts and the appellate courts of Pennsylvania. While a Deputy Attorney General\, Judge Stabile also served as the acting chief of this state-wide trial division and successfully argued and litigated now precedential case law in the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. \nIn 1987\, Judge Stabile joined the prestigious law firm of Dilworth Paxson LLP\, and was a partner and the managing member of its Harrisburg office from 1992 until his election to the Superior Court in 2013. His practice at Dilworth principally involved complex commercial and business litigation. While at Dilworth\, he continued to successfully argue and litigate cases in the appellate courts of Pennsylvania. NCAA\, held that sports gambling was legal in all of the United States. By 2019\, many states began approving both traditional and sports betting\, making on-line gambling accessible by cell phone\, computer\, and tablets. As the world changed in 2020 with the onset of work from home law practices due to COVID-19\, isolation and easy access to gambling followed. With it came the compulsive gambler. \nInternet gambling and Sports betting apps are now an everyday part of watching television. Whether these forms of gambling are ever “risk free” may depend upon the nature of the risk involved.
