SUMMARY:*FREE* Be It Resolved… Striving for a (Realistic) Work/Life Balance in 2026 (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:As part of our 2025 Membership Week celebration\, we are pleased to offer this virtual CLE at no cost to all current LBA members. This complimentary registration is available exclusively to LBA members.\nONLINE REGISTRATION INCLUDED BELOW.\nCLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD A REGISTRATION FORM\n \nEvent Description \nWe are at that time again. Namely\, the approach of the new year. Resolution time. Most people don’t stick to them. Research has shown that within weeks\, only about 10% or so of the resolvers accomplish their resolutions—with the majority of the other resolvers abandoning them. And lawyers?? How many of us in practice do “take five”\, or even four? How many don’t take anything? We feel we have to be super lawyers. \nIn this informative presentation you will hear several suggestions on how to make New Year’s resolutions stick and not fizzle out like fireworks on a rainy night. But in this case they may not just light up the sky\, but brighten your life- both personally and professionally. \nRecent studies have shown that there has been a dramatic increase in impairment due to alcoholism\, addiction and mental health disorders among members of the legal profession. The statistics are compelling and clearly indicate that 1 out of 3 attorneys will likely have a need for substance use or mental health services at some point in their careers. \nMr. Quinn will discuss: \n\nThe early warning signs of impairment\, with special emphasis on stress\, burnout and trauma\, including the mental health and emotional impact they have on members of the legal profession.\nWell-being strategies that really work.\nHow the law firm culture impacts emotional distress and what can be done to improve it.\nThe free services that Lawyers Assistance Programs provide to lawyers\, judges\, their family members and law students.\nA close look at what barriers exist that prevent lawyers from seeking the help they need.\nThe role that education plays in breaking the stigma and fear associated with addiction and mental illness in the legal profession.\n\nCREDIT(S): \n1.0 ETHICS CREDIT \nSPEAKER: \n \nBrian S. Quinn\, Esquire\nEducation and Outreach Coordinator\, Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of Pennsylvania \nBrian S. SUMMARY:What Should I Do? Ethical Dilemmas and the Impaired Colleague (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE REGISTRATION INCLUDED BELOW.\nCLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD A REGISTRATION FORM\n \nEvent Description \n“I think he drinks too much – but he’s my boss!” \n“She’s the firm’s rainmaker\, but something isn’t right.” \n“What will happen to our reputation if our clients find out he’s in a mental health facility?” \nThese issues are becoming more common as the prevalence rates for impairment due to substance and alcohol misuse\, stress\, anxiety and depression continue to rise. One out of three lawyers will require some form of treatment for these issues in their careers. Despite these startling statistics\, the fear of asking for help remains. Many believe it is the very culture which has been created in the legal profession that has lent itself to the notion that overwork remains the norm and seeking assistance is a sign of weakness. \nDo I say something or remain silent? What will happen under either scenario? Have we become enablers who simply sweep problems “under the rug” and hope for the best or are we going to be proactive members of a profession that impacts society every day? \nThis program will explore: \n\nThe ethical dilemmas that can occur when a colleague\, a supervisor or a subordinate exhibits signs of distress or impairment;\nThe duty to report misconduct as set forth in the Rules of Professional Conduct.\nThe responsibilities imposed by the Rules upon both supervisory and subordinate attorneys for the misconduct of attorneys and staff members.\nThe harm that can occur to all parties by “looking the other way” or ignoring new bad behaviors because it’s “none of my business.”\nThe stigma that surrounds substance misuse and mental health issues in the legal profession.\nThe free resources that Lawyers Assistance programs provide to help lawyers\, judges\, their families and law students.\n\nCREDIT(S): \n1.0 ETHICS CREDIT \nSPEAKER: \n \nBrian S. SUMMARY:Unlocking Business Success: Navigating Intellectual Property Protection with Kevin Myhre (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE REGISTRATION INCLUDED BELOW.\nCLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD A REGISTRATION FORM\n \nEvent Description \nHave you ever wondered how intellectual property can help protect different aspects of your business? Join Kevin Myhre from Barley Snyder for a presentation that offers an overview of patent\, trademark\, copyright\, and trade secret protection. The focus will be on critical hurdles often overlooked and aspects of protection that are commonly misunderstood. \nKevin is actively involved in patent application preparation and prosecution\, handling trademark issues\, and supporting litigation across all areas of intellectual property law. His unique background as a USPTO patent examiner—specializing in driverless and autonomous vehicle technology—is complemented by practical experience in the engineering field. \nCREDIT(S): \n1.0 SUBSTANTIVE CREDIT \nSPEAKER: \n \nKevin C. Myhre\, Esquire\nPartner\, Barley Snyder \nAs a patent attorney in the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group\, Kevin brings unique perspective to his work for clients at various stages. Kevin is involved in patent application preparation and prosecution\,\ntrademark matters\, and litigation support across all areas of intellectual property law\, including research and strategy development.Kevin’s distinct background as a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) patent examiner – where his field of examination focused on driverless or autonomous vehicle technology in the transportation industry – is complemented by his real-world experience working in the engineering community. As an aerospace engineering major at the University of Virginia\, he gained professional experience in the research and\ndevelopment department of a Philadelphia-area airline safety manufacturer. Further rounding out his unique experience\, several years into his career as a patent attorney\, Kevin immersed himself in the European\npatent process for four weeks by participating in a work-exchange arrangement with a Munich-based intellectual property law firm.Because many of the applications Kevin examined on behalf of the USPTO were related to driverless or autonomous vehicle technology\, Kevin has a unique capability to assist clients with the optimal strategies and\npotential pitfalls in prosecuting patent applications focused on these technologies. Nevertheless\, whether an invention involves mechanical\, electrical\, or software-based technology\, the dual nature of Kevin’s experience has given him an intricate\, inside knowledge of how the patent process works\, what a patent examiner is looking for in a patent application\, and the best course to chart for representing a client throughout a range of patent-related matters.\nOutside of his work with clients\, Kevin has committed himself to improving the quality of life in suburban Philadelphia and the business world abroad through volunteering with both local and international\norganizations including the Boy Scouts\, his local economic development council and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. In his free time\, Kevin enjoys running in 5K races along with his family\nthroughout suburban Philadelphia to aid charitable causes\, especially those that support access to legal assistance for those in need. \nQUESTIONS?\nEmail Lexi Driendl (lexi@lancasterbar.org)\, Continuing Legal Education & Marketing Coordinator

Attendees will gain practical guidance on advancing settlement discussions\, recognizing when to press forward\, and achieving finality for their clients through the mediation process. \nCREDIT(S): \n1.0 SUBSTANTIVE CREDIT \nSPEAKER: \n \nHon. Christopher C. Conner (Ret.)\nMediator/Arbitrator\, Optimal Dispute Resolutions \nJudge Christopher C. Conner continues his decorated and renowned career at Optimal Dispute Resolutions\, following his retirement from the bench after more than 20 successful years as a federal judge. Judge Conner joined Optimal Dispute Resolutions in 2025 after serving as a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania from 2002 to 2024. His time on the bench also included the esteemed honor of serving as the district’s chief judge from 2013 to 2020. \nJudge Conner acts as a mediator assisting clients in achieving amicable resolutions prior to trial. He is also happy to accept appointments as a special master or arbitrator in complex litigation\, including multidistrict litigation matters (MDL). \nThousands of cases came into Judge Conner’s courtroom\, where he fairly and without bias presided over some of the most significant cases in the Middle District. Among the most notable was the “Kids for Cash” case\, where two federal judges in northeast Pennsylvania were sent to prison for receiving money for declaring juveniles delinquent and assigning them to residential placement centers for infractions that normally would result in minor penalties. Judge Conner presided over multiple hearings and a lengthy trial to determine damages for the individuals impacted by the scheme\, including determining damage amounts for the families impacted by the scheme between the judges and the juvenile detention center’s owner. The case drew national headlines for months as it played out in Judge Conner’s courtroom. \nJudge Conner’s judicial experience has made him a coveted speaker on continuing legal education (CLE) panels and\nlectures in Pennsylvania. He’s also a sought-after author and has spoken and written on a broad spectrum of litigation-related topics and ethical issues. \nJudge Conner serves as co-chair of Saxton & Stump’s Investigations and Criminal Defense and Appellate and Post-Trial Advocacy groups. Quinn\, Esquire – Education and Outreach Coordinator Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of PA \nMany of us were attracted to the legal profession because we care about people and want to help them. Attorneys hopefully recognize that\, unlike many other professionals\, their lives are already filled to the brim with anxiety and stress. The consequences of shrugging it off can be catastrophic. One of those consequences that we often hear about is burnout. \nAnd then there’s a special type of burnout called “secondary traumatic stress” or “compassion fatigue”. The ramifications of trauma and compassion fatigue aren’t discussed as frequently as those of stress and burnout thus\, for many attorneys\, they are topics in need of attention. \nSecondary or vicarious trauma can be the cumulative effect of listening to a client or witness relay stressful\, often graphic\, stories and experiences. When we examine it more closely\, we realize it is a part of many practice areas. Those who experience compassion fatigue tend to take on the pain\, suffering and burdens of the people they are helping. It is an exhaustion that is felt physically\, emotionally\, or mentally and can affect numerous areas of your life\, often leaving you feeling numb. \nRecent studies have shown that there has been a dramatic increase in impairment due to alcoholism\, addiction\, and mental health disorders among members of the legal profession. The statistics are compelling and clearly indicate that 1 out of 3 attorneys will likely have a need for substance use or mental health services at some point in their careers. \n10:15-11:15 AM | CLE 3 | 1.0 substantive credit \nNavigating Divorce for Business Owners: Strategies and Considerations for Attorneys \nPresented by Teresa Marino\, Esquire\, Member\, McNees Wallace & Nurick & Jill Laskowitz\, Esquire\, Of Counsel\, McNees Wallace & Nurick \nTeresa Marino and Jill Laskowitz will guide attorneys through the special considerations involved when clients’ personal and business interests overlap in divorce cases.
